Whether you accidentally hid rows or inherited a file with missing information, these simple steps will let you unhide your data efficiently. Follow along to become more confident in managing the visibility of rows in your Excel workbooks.
Identifying Hidden Rows
Open your Excel worksheet where you suspect some rows are hidden. Look at the row numbers on the left side of your worksheet. If rows are missing, you will see a break in the sequence of numbers.
Check for small icons — usually small triangular indicators or double lines — in the row headers. These icons signal that certain rows are hidden.
Unhiding Hidden Rows
Move your cursor to the row numbers that surround the hidden rows. For example, if rows 5 and 7 are visible but row 6 is hidden, position your cursor between row 5 and row 7.
Notice the small indicators or icons that appear — these represent the hidden row(s) in your worksheet.
Click the indicator or icon. This action will immediately unhide the hidden row(s), making them visible again in your spreadsheet. Check your worksheet to ensure the previously hidden rows now appear as normal rows with their contents restored.
Hiding Rows Again
If you would like to hide the rows once more after viewing or editing them, select the row number or numbers you wish to hide.
Right-click on the highlighted row numbers to open the context menu. Click Hide Rows from the menu. The selected rows will be hidden from view, and a small indicator will again appear in the row headers.
Tips for Managing Hidden Rows
Double-check for gaps in the row numbering when reviewing large spreadsheets to make sure you’re not missing any hidden data.
Use the Format menu in the Home tab and select Hide & Unhide for more control over row and column visibility.
Undo accidental hiding or unhiding by clicking Undo in the toolbar immediately after the action.
Remember that hidden rows can sometimes contain formulas or data that may affect your calculations even though they're not visible.
Before sharing or finalizing an Excel file, check for any hidden rows to ensure you’re not omitting important data unintentionally.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
If clicking the indicator does not unhide the row, ensure you are not in Filter mode. Turn off filters by clicking Clear in the Sort & Filter group.
If you can’t find the hidden row indicators, try selecting the rows above and below the missing row(s), right-click, and then click Unhide.
For stubborn rows that refuse to appear, select the entire worksheet by clicking the square at the intersection of the row and column headers, then right-click any row and click Unhide.
Hidden rows caused by grouping (from the Data tab’s Group function) can be unhidden using the plus (+) or minus (-) outline symbols on the left side of the row numbers.
